New Members Rock!

Ready to Roll!
We had four new members join us at the Bears Den tonight.. that's awesome!  - Truth be told, two of them officially joined Team R.E.D. at the TerraLoco Resolution Night, one joined Saturday morning during Off Season Striders, and one joined tonight!  - Sometimes it doesn't matter how you get it one, just that you get it done!

Welcome to Jill, Lance, Shannon and Kasey!

Shannon Joins Team R.E.D.! - She'll be a great new member, and she's preparing for her first half marathon!
Tom might have been tip-toeing, it's hard to say for sure.

Jill & Lance Join Team R.E.D.!  - They are crushing it... we'll like them too!

Kasey Joins Team R.E.D!  - but she couldn't stay for he shirt presentation. There's a story here.. see below...
Kasey had once asked 'What does it cost to join Team R.E.D.?"  and I replied with $20.. then some time passed by and she asked again, "What does it cost to officially join Team R.E.D.?" and I replied $1000 ---   Well, after some negotiation, she got it done!  The picture doesn't do it justice, but that's $20 with a Kidney in a Specimen Bag!

  • Saturday 9am:  The Wilder Foot Race is set for Spring Valley.  The route is roughly 21 miles and unsupported, bring your own hydration. Consider having a great time on a this no frills event.. get your long run in with others along the wonderful terrain near Spring Valley.
    • To Register simply email wilderfootraces@gmail.com  There is no fee to register!
  • Sunday 8am:  Off Season Striders at Panera South.  The Sunday morning OSS runs will continue with rotating locations even after the long training runs kick off.

Beer Mile Plaque

We've created a Beer Mile Plaque to mount at the Bears Den, along with a Bucket Award - which may not go up at the Den as it might be a target of thievery because it's so cool!

Come check the goods out in person on Thursday at the Bears Den!

  • Thursday 4:45pm:  Progressive Run... we will pick up the pace, get faster, at each mile mark.  this progression is 7.5 miles.. but you can progress any distance you want to try!  -   the paces can very too, as long as you're getting faster throughout the run, you're doing the workout!  ---
    • This Progressive Run starts from the Bears Den at 4:45pm (we don't have much time to spare to get back in time for the 6pm run, so we will not be waiting for late-comers.)
    • If you run the Progressive Run you might consider running a cool-down with the team, or just settling in for drinks/food at the Den... all is good.
  • Thursday 6pm:  Team R.E.D. is heading to the Bears Den in Byron... plan on 3, 4 or 6 miles of fun!  Again, no matter how fast or how slow you like to go, all are welcome!
  • Saturday 7:30am:  Off Season Striders  are at Newts North. What a fun location!  The Marathon / Half Marathon training long runs from the RAC will kick off Feb 14th so this is one of the last official Saturday OSS runs.
  • Sunday 8am:  Off Season Striders at Panera South.  The Sunday morning OSS runs will continue with rotating locations even after the long training runs kick off.
Look a little bit ahead, and The Frozen Goose 10K/5K Run/Walk is coming up on Feb 7th!  It's a great fundraiser put on by the Optimist Club.  Details can be found at frozengoose.com

Below are a couple of pics from Monday Maniacs at Beetles... it was a great night for a run or walk!

USA Track & Field Team Circuit!

Some of you are very interested in the Team Circuit and others not so much.  This entire post is dedicated to that... so if you are simply not interested, you may want to scroll to the previous post to see what's coming up this week!

If you're interested, or wonder what I'm talking about.. read on!

***********************

With a lot of recent discussion regarding the USA Track & Field Team Circuit I thought I’d provide answers to some of the Frequently Asked Questions
  • Why would I do this? – Some of the key items include, but not limited to
    • Guaranteed entry to some hard to get into events such as the Twin Cities 10 Mile and the TC 1 Mile.
    • Discounts at many of the USATF races, including a $20 discount at the Torchlight 5K – this is one of Team R.E.D.s  favorite annual road trips!
    • Preferred start at many races.
    •  You get to compete not only as an individual, but also compete as part of a team and that’s fun!
    • USATF has other perks you can find on their website at http://www.usatf.org/Products---Services/Individual-Memberships/Membership-Benefits.aspx
  • As a member of Team R.E.D. am I automatically included on the race team during the USATF races? – No.  Team R.E.D. pays annually to maintain status as an official USATF Club. Any member who wishes to compete for Team R.E.D. in the Team Circuit would need to register as an individual and associate themselves with Team R.E.D.
  • What does it cost to join USATF?  - An individual membership is $30 for one year - with discounts if your register for multiple years.
  • Are you telling me I need to join USATF to be a member of Team R.E.D.? – No – you can be a Team R.E.D. member and choose not to compete in the Team Circuit. In fact, all the team circuit races are open to the public.
  • Do I have to be a member of Team R.E.D. to be associated with Team R.E.D. USATF?  - Yes, the Team R.E.D. USATF is comprised of Team R.E.D. Members Only.
  • Which races make up the Team Circuit?
    • Sunday March 22nd Irish Run St. Paul 8k – St. Paul

      • USATF Minnesota 10 Mile Championship
  • What if I already registered for one of the races? Will I still be able to compete as Team R.E.D.?  - Yes, just email me your name and USATF membership number, and I will follow-up to make sure you are officially racing for Team R.E.D.
  • Do I have to be at all the Team Circuit races?  - No, come to as many as you can.  Yet we’d love to field a complete team at as many races as possible.  Dan Mesenburg will be helping to keep us aware of when the races are approaching.
  • If I want to compete for Team R.E.D. do I just register for each of the races on my own, and someone will know I’m a member of Team R.E.D.?  - No.  Each race has special registration instructions (and they all vary).  The instructions are sometimes not available until the race is nearing. The instructions will be shared on this blog and via our Facebook page.
  • What does it take to have a complete team?   Team R.E.D. has two teams... The bullets below are applicable for both our Male team & Female team.
    • The Open Division is scored using the times of the top five finishers from our team (regardless of age).  We can race unlimited numbers, but our top five score.  - If we have less than five, we are incomplete and will not be factored in the scoring.
    • Over 40 years old - Top three score (less than three - incomplete)
    • Over 50 years old - Top three score (less than three - incomplete)
    • Over 60 years old - Top three score (less than three - incomplete)

New Member!

Welcome Dana to Team R.E.D.!  -  Many of you have met her, but she hadn't officially joined until this past week... it's a sign that as she ages she gets wiser!  - Dana also celebrated a birthday today!

Welcome Dana... and Happy Birthday!

Dana joins Team R.E.D!  What a great addition!

Tonight & The Weekend

Let's keep it rolling... it's been fantastic weather for getting out there and doing something, anything!  Well, almost anything as we could use a bit of snow to help create opportunities to snowshoe!

Thursday 6pm:  We are at WildWood Bar & Grill.  Put on some reflective gear and get out there tonight! We'll have a wide variety of pace groups once again, including the newly formed 12/min mile or walking group!  -- Also remember, WildWood is extending Happy Hour by 1/2 hour (until 7:30pm for us as many of us will not be back until happy hour is nearly over).
Saturday 7:30am: The Off Season Striders are meeting at Charlies Eatery & Pub on 2nd Street. You can travel whatever distance you see fit, then come back for coffee, breakfast or whatever suits you!  We gather by the hotel entrance.
Sunday 8am:  Panera South is the scene for another round of Off Season Striders.  As always, come back for the social side of things!

Strong Maniacs

A quick post to say tonight at Monday Maniacs we were connected... and it turned into three pace groups - no one was alone - this is a new mission... creating opportunity no matter what your pace/speed.  Even if you're not at any one of these paces below, you would not be far ahead or far behind.

  • Two people rolled at a 7:30 Mile
  • About six were out at a 9ish mile
  • Another half dozen were at 13ish mile

Walk. Run. Eat. Drink. Dance! -  Like Lisa says below...

We will continue to post updates when we have a leader for a group less intent on speed, and yet fully intent on fitness.

This Thursday at Wildwood there is a leader for that very group.  When we say all paces welcome, we mean it.  -- Even if you don't run exactly any of the paces above, you will be start and finish with others and be near them the entire way.

Monday Maniacs at the Tap House

A reflective bunch!

More Congrats & A Look At The Week Ahead!

Below are some pics from Thursday's Team R.E.D. - It was a great turnout as the weather was warmer, our Disney Warriors had returned, and we recognized some of our members with The People's Choice Awards!

Ann receives The People's Choice - Team R.E.D Champion Award!

Dan receives The People's Choice - Team R.E.D. Champion Award (and Roger oversees the ceremony)
Gwen receives The People's Choice - Most Inspiring Award!

Tom receives The People's Choice - Most Inspiring Award!
Tom giving Tom bunnie ears... appears it was painful!
***************************

The Rochester Track Club also held an awards Banquet on Saturday Night.. I know Jim Li and Tom Woo were honored at the event.  I'll share the details, when I have the full story, as I was unable to attend the banquet myself.

**************************

What's coming up this week?

  • Monday 6pm:  Monday Maniacs are taking off from the Tap House, which also means, they are returning to the Tap House! Join us for a run and/or walk... then stay for the social!
    • New this week, Dan is pacing a group of Walkers and people who wish to group run, but would plan on a pace of 12/min miles or greater.  If you've been considering coming to Team R.E.D. but have been worried about keeping up, consider Monday night for a first visit to the Team!
    • Any time we know we have a leader for this pace group, I'll share it with the weekly updates.
    • Here's a link to a story about the value of walking - I had referenced this story in a previous post, but for some reason it's gone! Some of you may know the Mayo Clinic Doc appearing in the story.  http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/new-study-finds-lack-exercise-deadlier-obesity-n287091
  • Tuesday 6:15pm: The Trail Crew is heading to Whitewater State Park... it's always fun there! Meet at the parking lot near the Nature Store... Snowshoeing is the plan, with libations at Mauer Bros after the workout!
  • Tuesday 5:30pm:  The Hill Workouts return!  These are typically on Wednesdays, but this week it needed to move to Tuesday.  Meet at Edina Realty near TJ Maxx and get into the hills... up, down, up, down....
  • Thursday 6am:  Speed work on the indoor track of RCTC! One way to get fast, is to run fast! Always bring a dry pair of shoes to change into once inside the field house, as wet shoes are not allowed on the track.
  • Thursday 6pm:  Team R.E.D. heads to Wildwood Bar & Grill in Rochester.  We'll do our typical options in the ranges of 3, 4 or 6 miles.. and come back for the happy hour specially extended just for us!  Two for One until 7:30pm.
  • The weekend will certainly have some Off Season Strider options... the locations have not yet been revealed.  Plan on 7:30am Saturday and 8am Sunday!
With warmer Temps the Turnout was strong at Off Season Striders!

Claire speeds to the lead, with Gwen and Teri following closely.

Keeping Up

Keeping up... by far the number one email concern I hear from people considering coming to a group event with Team R.E.D. is "I'm not sure I can keep up with you all" - That's a very natural feeling, and we're trying to help with a newly formed pace group!

Dan Mesenburg is the leader in that area!  He has volunteered to lead a group of people who might prefer to walk, or run a 12/min mile or slower.  I think this could be a great way to get more people involved!  -- Thanks so much for volunteering Dan!

The first opportunity to join this Pace Group run is this Monday at 6pm!  - Join us at the Tap House for Monday Maniacs... some will run fast, some will run medium, some will run slower, and some will walk!  You will not be alone regardless of your pace.

Check out this story on Nightly News and know that any pace is the right pace.  Also note, a Mayo Clinic Doc mentions that sometimes we think "if we don't run all the time we're not as good of an exerciser"...  I think that's a great quote to make us realize, reaching a goal of being fit can happen in quite a variety of ways!

***********
What else is up?  Here are the next few days...
  • Saturday 7:30am - Join Off Season Striders at Brothers Bar & Grill. As always, part behind Brothers and use the back entrance. Always fun to run from Brothers!

  • Sunday 8am - Off Season Striders is at it again.. this time from Dunn Bros North.

Get Dopey!

Several Team R.E.D. members are off to a warmer climate for the Disney Marathon weekend... it will be fun to hear their stories when they return!  Safe travels... and don't forget to have fun at the happiest place on earth!

A portion of Team R.E.D. in Disney... front Dan & Sonja.. back Mike, Tom, Shane, Gwen and Aaron

Shane, Laura, Gwen, Amy, Dan & Ann are doing the Dopey... 5K, 10K, Half Marathon & Full Marathon!  Fun!
More friends are on the way for the Disney weekend... It's really hard to believe they could leave all this....

Jess dressed for success!

Monday Maniacs No Fear

Schedule Note: The Thursday 6pm Team R.E.D. Run from Brothers Bar & Grill is still a go...  however, the Progressive Run has been cancelled.

Oh.. and another picture!  I nearly forgot a couple of photos from the RTC's Prediction Run.. Several R.E.D. members earned honors!

Braden ... it's a little too fast, but so is he - Braden was the only person DQ'd for running faster than his prediction!

The top 10!
In the Top 10 photo, you'll see some faces of R.E.D.!   Allan won! He's 2nd from the left as you look at this pic.  Larry, Millie and Travis all made the top 10 too!  Scott on the far right is an outsider R.E.D. guy... and Dave (far left) and Summer (center) are eyeballing the group!

The young lady in front of Allan was running with me when I realized we were going to slow... I said it out loud, and she took off like a bullet! - I think she finished 3rd (or there abouts) - while I didn't listen to my own advice, and I finished 11th!!!  One spot out of awards!

Don't forget about the great volunteers! There were several Team R.E.D. members volunteering at this fun track club event!  Below I captured a shot of Mase, Sonja and Wendy keeping everything and everyone in line!

  • Thursday 4:45pm:  Join us at Brothers Bar & Grill (back parking lot) at 4:45pm for a progressive run.  The workout will be 7.5 miles and we'll be back in time to join the Team R.E.D crew.
  • Thursday 6pm:  Team R.E.D. gathers at Brothers Bar & Grill for a run downtown and back to the food and drink! Plan on 3-6 miles.
  • Jan 17th 5:30-9pm - Just a reminder - RTC's annual Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 17th.  In addition to the wonderful guest speaker, Dr. Ed Creagan,  we also encourage people to attend to help the track club thank Jim Mason for his amazing service as RTC's president and all of the volunteer work he's done for the club.

Winter Blues? Not!

Below are a few goals for Team R.E.D. in 2015... please feel free to email me at byron.teamred@gmail.com if there are other ideas you would like to see added to the goal list!

  • Team R.E.D. Ambassadors - We started down this road a couple of years ago, but never fully executed the idea. What is a Team R.E.D. Ambassador?
    • An Ambassador is someone who is prepared to greet a newcomer.
    • The Ambassador will run or walk the pace of the newcomer on their first night.
    • The Ambassador will introduce the newcomer to people during the social.
      • If you're interested and willing to be a Team R.E.D. Ambassador please email me at byron.teamred@gmail.com - if you simply tell me of your interest during a group run, I will likely forget!  Please email your interest to participate.
  • Engage more Walkers - When sharing information about our club, consider sharing the concept of W.R.E.D.D.

Walk. Run. Eat. Drink. Dance!

  • Pictures - More group run pics for the Blog.  We are good at getting pics during races, however, we can do better on our regular group runs.
  • New Race Singlets - They are about 24 months past due - yet they are actually now getting done! New race singlets are on order.
  • Volunteerism & Charity - Continue our great sense of Volunteerism and Charitable Contributions! This is a strong suit of Team R.E.D. and something to be proud of!
  • Support of Teammates - This is another strong suit of this team.  Let's continue to pay attention to the goals of teammates, and help each other achieve!

Below is a slide show from the 3rd Race of the Winter 5K Race Series.  Several Team R.E.D. members took home awards, including new shoes from TerraLoco! Gift Cards from Apollo Liquor! Gift Cards from Rochester Cycling!  - bunches of prizes as well.

Congrats to Team R.E.D. member Eric Klein for winning the Male Overall Championship of the series.  It was a back and forth battle throughout the series for Eric, and he landed on top!

The female championship went to superstar Ruth Brennan Morrey!  I'll add the complete results when they are available, I will also steal some of Woo's award ceremony pics at that time so you can see which teammates took to the podium!
