  • Monday 6pm:  The Monday Maniacs are back at WildWood in Rochester!  The trails should be clear of snow (and hopefully clear of ice!).   WildWood is located on the backside of the Ramada, near the TJ Maxx Plaza.
  • Tuesday 6:30pm:  Tuesday's Trail crew is hitting the bike trail... the Great River Ridge Bike Trail starting in Viola at Town Hall and heading out and back! (it'll be mostly downhill on the way back!).  6 miles is the long plan, if you want to go shorter, turn around earlier!
  • Wednesday 5:30pm:   The indoor track at RCTC is still the place to be if you want to work speed!  Bring a dry pair of shoes to change into once indoors.
  • Thursday 6pm:  Team R.E.D. is at the Bears Den in Byron.  If the country roads are dry, we'll head out of town! If not, we'll stick to the bike trails.

A couple interesting races are coming up this summer.. check them out below, thanks to Kelle and Marv for sharing the details!

Hammer Race
The Hammer Race is an obstacle/terrain race in Southern MN. Part adventure race and part obstacle race, the Hammer Race is as much of a mental challenge as it is a physical one. On top of the mud,
obstacles, and rugged terrain, participants in the Hammer Race must carry a minimum 8lb sledge hammer throughout the entire course. You must cross the finish line with a Hammer to be considered a finisher, and may even need it to do so. So make sure you get to know your Hammer companion, and do not neglect it. Talk to it. Sleep with it. Keep it well groomed. Work to strengthen the bond, for you will need it to stay close and have no reason to wander off.

Web site is: www.hammerrace.com
Registration: http://www.zapevent.com/listactivities.aspx?eventid=3289

Tortoise vs Hare
Using a formula that factors in a runners age, gender, height, and weight, a graded start time is given to each runner. Individuals who have been blessed with a "runner's body" and are in their prime running years will receive little to no time advantage. All others will be give a head start.

Here we have members Chelsie, Corrine and Sylvia, along with their friend Desirae'.   I do have one question for Chelsie, why is Desirae' not yet a member of Team R.E.D.?

Chelsie, Corrine, Sylvia & Desirae'

Thanks to Facebook stalking, I also saw Steve D ran a strong 5K at Return of the Robin.   I haven't seen the results yet, so there very well may have been more of you participating.  I'll keep my eyes open for those results.

Tuesday 6:15pm:  Snowshoe!  Possibly the last one of the winter!   Meet at the BP in Marion and caravan out to Bill Barnacle's park for some fantastic snowshoeing in the daylight.   If you've never heard of Bill Barnacle, check this one out it is truly a beautiful place.

Here's what it looks like in the summer... and it appears to offer a workout!

Thursday 6pm:  Team R.E.D. returns to Brothers Bar & Grill!  It was a well attended night last time (and there's a purple house nearby that might have beer available).      Please park in back of the bar, as that keeps the prime-time parking available for people who might otherwise think the bar is full at 6pm... yet it's not, as we're off on a run.   A couple of distances will be offered, in the areas of 3, 4 or 6 miles.

The Byron Bears are taking on the PEM Bulldogs for a chance to advance to State in boys basketball!  If you attend the game, be sure to join us at Brothers Post game!  -- we have members from PEM and Byron.. so the fun can continue!

Welcome to our newest sponsor!

I'm thrilled to announce Appliance Village is joining our list of great sponsors!  Tod & Meg have always been wonderful members of Team R.E.D. and now they have brought Appliance Village on board with a sponsorship as well!   Please be sure to say Thank You!  ... and don't forget to visit Appliance Village when you are in the market for appliances or service!

Seeking Volunteers!

With the Track season upon us... and home hosting about to kick off, I'm seeking a couple of volunteers for a couple of roles.

But before we get to that... is it just me? or did the Bears Den Bear get too excited about all the attention he got from the ladies, and Steve?

Home Host Schedule Volunteer:   In the past, it's been a blast and very much appreciated to be invited to members homes for a run/walk and social on non-bears den nights.

I'm seeking someone to help coordinate the scheduling of home hosts.   The bullets below sort of outline what I think you'd be signing up for if you choose to volunteer for this role.
  • Be the point of contact for people who are interested in home hosting. Members will be pointed to your email address if they are interested in home hosting.
  • Track which 2nd, 4th and sometimes 5th Thursdays are already booked by a home host, and which are still available.
  • Communicate with home hosts on details such as address, routes, and what Team members bring, i.e. is it a pot luck?  are beverages provided or byob?  should we bring lawn chairs?  that sort of stuff.
  • Communicate with Tom to get the details onto the blog the weekend prior to a home host night.
Route Talker:   Track season is one of my favorite times of year!  However, it does mean I'll miss a certain amount of Thursday Team R.E.D. nights (not all, but several).  We're seeking someone who feels they can be at many of the Spring time Team R.E.D. Thursdays (over the next 2 1/2 months). The bullets below outline what I think you'd be signing up for if you choose to volunteer for this role.
  • Come up with potential routes of 3, 4 or 6 miles for a Thursday night run/walk.
  • Arrive on time to deliver the route talk (that's one of my greatest weaknesses!)
  • If not available to give a route talk on a Thursday, seek out someone who can.
Thanks for considering!  Drop me (Tom O) an email at byron.teamred@gmail.com if you're interested in either of these roles!

Nice work.. today and always! - Updates for the weekend, and Monday in this post as well.

Way to go Team R.E.D.!   So many of you are taking part in Jim Parry's 16 hour treadmill run for the YMCA!  He's a great role model for many young people, and he's raising funds for the Y!  His goal is $5,000!  You can help by going to http://www.rochfamy.org/ here and clicking Donate Now!

************************
On another great note... Team R.E.D. received a fantastic Thank You card from our member Jean, who has run into a tough medical spot.  Many of us have seen Jean lately, and she's looking great!  There's more work ahead for her, so please keep sending prayers and good wishes...  Thanks to all of you for your generousity and thoughtfulness in giving her a gift certificate to Waiter Express.

If you are like me and can't read little print.. click on the card below, and you'll be able to read the card.  I, personally, am looking forward to the party!

 ***********************

  • Saturday 6am:  The front loading crew will meet at the RAC in Rochester to put some miles into before the official Marathon Training run.  We'll be back to the RAC in time to connect with the rest of the group.
  • Saturday 7:15am:  The Marathon Training long run has route options of 13 and 15 miles.. this is a supported training run, you'll find gatorade and water, as well as some snacks from time to time!
  • Sunday 8:30am:  With Daylight savings time upon us, the Off Season Striders are splitting the difference and starting at 8:30am!  Meet at Panera South and get some fun miles in with the group.
  • Monday 6pm:  It's Wildwood Baby!  ... and that's a quote!  Monday Maniacs head back to Wildwood and have surefire plans for run during and after the run!
************************

This past Thursday night was well attended... and we celebrated Steve's new pair of shoes courtesy of TerrraLoco!    We celebrated with a round of Harvey Wallbangers!  What a fun drink to pronounce out loud.   Congrats on the shoes Steve... and thanks for the round!

Also note, with daylight savings time upon us, we can soon toss the headlamps!  Sweet!

Steve has an announcement!
"I won new shoes and I'm buying Harvey Wallbangers!"

Below is a list of USA Track & Field Team Circuit races for the 2013 season.   This is a fun chance for Team R.E.D. to compete against other clubs from around the state.   Particiapation in this circuit is in no way required.  But if you're so inclined, it's a lot of fun!

The team circuit scores clubs in 3 categories with both men and women competing seperately.
  • Open:  Top 5 finishers from each club score points
  • Masters: Top 3 finishers over 40 years old from each club score points
  • Grand Masters:  Top 3 finishers over 50 years old from each club score points.
A runner can score in multiple categories.  For example, if Woo is in the top 3 over 50, and top 3 over 40.. and top 5 overall from Team R.E.D. -- he'll score in each category!

If you'd like to register for USATF and join us on Team R.E.D. (club #0435) you can do so at the following link.   http://www.usatfmn.org/membership

What's up?

A whole lotta stuff is up!

Don't forget about Jim Parry's 16 hour treadmill run this Friday!  There are still many time slots available to run along side Jim (gives you a great chance to chat and figure out what drives him!).   If you can't make it, please consider a contribution... the man is 16 hours on a treadmill, a handful of dollars will help him reach his fundraising goal of $5000!   More information is in the bullet below.
  • 16 hour treadmill run to benefit the Rochester Area Family Y's Annual Support Campaign will be live-streamed at http://mrparrysendurancechallenge.blogspot.com/ this Friday from 5am-9pm. Call 287.2260 to reserve a time to run or walk with me for a bit. Donations can be made by phone, in person, or at www.rochfamy.org

Wednesday 5:30pm:   The Speed work continues!   If you want to race fast this spring, this is seriously the one workout you need to try to fit in!   You'll be glad you did.   Join the group at the RCTC indoor track, located in the fieldhouse.
Wednesday 6pm:  Some fantastic snow has fallen... and the snowshoes are callin'!   Meet at the 1st Bridge of Oxbow Park (where headlamps if you got em).   The last few days have provided an awesome base for fun!
Thursday 6pm:  Team R.E.D. is at the Bears Den in Byron!  It's one of my favorite places... let's get there, get a run/walk and have some fun!
Friday 5am-9pm:  Jim Parry continues his drive to help the Y!  The notes above demonstrate how you can help!  -- I've signed up to run with him bright and early, and will see if I can slip a 2nd run in that day.   -- check your schedule and see if you can too!

Gotta Love the Snow!

Tuesday 6pm:  Based on the anticipated Road Conditions... Jim has moved Tuesday's snow shoe event, to Eastwood park in Rochester.  See  his comments below.
  • OK, I'll make a decision now so everybody has a chance to make plans. I think the roads will be really hard to get around on so we're moving this to Eastwood.     Eastwood has some great trails that are lit up with trail lights so no headlamps will be needed. Afterwards we'll hit up the Wicked Moose for refreshments.

Great night at Brothers!

Brothers Bar & Grill was host of a strong turnout for Team R.E.D. on Thursday.

Even a Chelsie and Matt sighting! One of the two (chelsie) even stopped drinking long enough to put on her running shoes and bring a couple of her friends out for a run.  Nice work!

Congratulations to Lana as she accepted her winning certificate good for a pair of Brooks shoes from TerraLoco!  Luckly I got the certificate back from this shady character!

Roger tried to steal the prize!
Jim presents the certificate to Lana.

The run and walk were great.. a pretty speedy pace out there, spring must be in the air!

Getting ready!
Have to watch for ceiling fans when taking a picture from this angle.  Trust me, my pointer finger can prove it to you!

  • Wednesday 5:30pm:  Speed work at the indoor track at RCTC!   This is a great chance to get ready for those 5Ks, 10Ks this season.... and speed is also important to your marathon goals.  If you can run these workouts, you'll have speed and conditioning for those long events!
  • Thursday 6pm:  We're back at the Bears Den in Byron!   This may be our last headlamp run with the time change coming soon!
    •  Be sure to wear reflective clothing (front and back!).  We did get a message from a friendly motorist, telling us she didn't see a couple of us as we snaked through Somerby a week ago.  So those reflections are critical on your back as well as your front.
